Kayley Holderness trained as a ceramic designer at Central Saint Martins before working as a studio assistant to several established potters, and has taught her own classes at Spirelight Studios in Islington for over a decade. She builds her own sculptural pieces by coiling grogged clay and finishing them with engobe washes, work that has shown at the Victoria and Albert Museum and featured on BBC Two. The workshops she runs cover beginner hand-building sessions, intermediate wheel practice for returning students and one-to-one private tuition, kept deliberately small so she can work with people individually rather than run a lecture-style class. A Fellow and Trustee of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, she sells gift vouchers for newcomers and keeps a mailing list for weekly updates rather than running a drop-in studio, meaning most students book ahead of time.
